I had a similar problem once with my old Dell Inspiron and this one
fixed it for me:

http://ubuntu-
austria.at/viewtopic.php?t=358&highlight=crash+installation

if you don't know German, after a failed start of X, you go to console
and type

sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo aticonfig --initial
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
startx

and if you are still on live CD, you have to do it twice (once for the
live CD and once for your real install).
