Reloading x using alt-ctrl-bkspc doesn't work for me, but a full cold boot does return the display to its native 1280x1024. A sidenote: since Intrepid Ibex doesn't work for me (locks up, looking for another thread), I tried a number of other distributions and found that many don't provide a fully usable driver for the Sis onboard video.
