http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=849089 says to open a console window
and start nautilus by typing
nautilus &
but that only started a file explorer window
This bug is similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/57784 suggests rotating
by opening a console windo and typing
xrandr -o left
xrandr-o normal
Which was pretty, but ineffectual in my case. Anyway this bug was closed due to
lack of info, but relates to

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/desktop-icons-are-missing-686269/
 suggested
ps -lfC nautilus
Which revealed:
F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI ADDR SZ WCHAN STIME TTY TIME CMD
0 S tim 5849 5758 0 80 0 - 21541 poll 08:47 ? 00:00:02
nautilus --no-desktop

But I could not find the gconfd/saved_state file,
http://linuxgator.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=129 suggested typing
"gconf-editor" in console (configuration editor is entirely missing from my
menu options).
navigating to apps/nautilus/desktop revealed nothing was set.

[Bug 181133] Kubuntu desktop icon missing (but file name present)May also be
relevant?

Ihave now wasted yet another hour getting nowhere and am beginning to
wonder if it is worth the trouble of finding out how to fix this
manually, if it is going to flip flop on and off anyway. These
instability of appearance bugs appear to be both persistent and
generally closed without being resolved. They really devalue the Ubuntu
experience
