The problems with sound crackles in the ALSA driver seem to have to do with 
assembly code that wasn't always turned on in older versions. For more details, 
see this bug:

I've rebuilt the Ubuntu libsdl packages with --disable-assembly which seems to 
solve this issue. Those packages can be found here:
http://haar.student.utwente.nl/~julius/debs/hardy/libsdl/

Try those when you have problems with the ALSA driver.
