You are correct. Both iso images were tested multiple times before
release. This issue was not reported before, therefore it is a good
assumption that it is within your own configuration. Perhaps there is a
separate boot partition installed by Gentoo that Ubuntu installed the
file to.

I have installed 8.04, 8.04.1, 8.10, and 9.04 many times on my four
hardware systems. Each time, the boot/initrd.img file is installed. I
should add that after performing the installation, le live environnement
launches itself (both with 8.04 and 8.10). Is it supposed to do so ?
Isn't it supposed to reboot instead ?This would indicate the file is
normally installed as expected.

You will get a desktop back, and should get a message asking if you wish
to restart to use the new installation after it completes. The desktop
cd installation from a live environment does not do an automatic restart
of the system after installation.
