Hello, I installed the xserver-xorg-video-intel package above and I could start KDE 4.1 with the composite effect enabled. So it works! Thanks a lot.
For the record, my laptop is a Thinkpad X40 with 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (see attached lsmod.txt).
