Appreciate the efforts on fixing this. I was experiencing the same issues on my freshly installed Xubuntu 8.10 PC, but then with video playback (wmv files for example). Although I had all common codecs installed (through Totem, which I use as well), Xfmedia didn't start up any of the videos.
It would only start up, blink with the video screen once and disappear (leaving only the play/pause/stop screen etc. behind). Then read somewhere that installing libxine1-ffmpeg could help (thanks Boris).
