Erdal solved the garbled screen issue by adding 'virtual 1400 1400' to his xorg.conf (second post). His remaining problem is the slowness.
When I added 'virtual 1920 1920' to my xorg.conf, the left/right option in the gui became available. That probably also happened to Erdal when he added 'virtual 1400 1400' to his xorg.conf. Erdal can you confirm this? In my case the slowness occurs when rotating left, right and inverted. Erdal only talked about slowness when rotating left so I'm not sure if we're experiencing the same problem but I still think we are.
