Here is lenhart's answer from the pulseaudio development team and my response. This is my take on it all.

I understand this but this isn't about adjusting alsamixer -c0 or pavucontrol. These are maxed out and the recording is very soft (indeed it doesn't matter what setting one uses for a digital microphone it has no effect).
