I got the information from upstream that there is a setting for that:
paste_detect_time. That is, if your irssi receives the next character
faster than that time it thinks it received it via a paste and does not
expand.

 With flakey networks this might be troublesome, if you type faster. But
it should rather be the exception and not the default. And you really
don't want to disable paste detection completely, trust me. If you
really feel that brave (but beware of channel fellows ranting against
you) setting paste_detect_time to 0msecs should disable it.
