I'm using a dell and didn't have this problem with 8.04 32-bit (now using 8.10 64-bit). Isn't pulse-audio in 8.04 to? Then downgrading might work (either ALSA and/or Pulse) to see which of them causes the problem. Somewhat strangly, an external mic does work - I cannot alter the input level correctly though and it is quite loud.
