Public bug reported: I have a few Western Digital USB HD that works properly under regular i686 GNU/Linux kernel. Now under Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64 ( 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 22:15:32 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux) they are not working flawlessy. By this I mean that the normal ehci_hcd driver works with the device properly under i686 kernel but under 64 bit kernel it reverts to ohci_hcd which is much slower.
A similar issue is seen in: bug #264789 Below is an output from dmesg at time of connecting the device. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [17051.500102] usb 3-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 14 [17066.648140] usb 3-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [17081.900635] usb 3-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [17082.116157] usb 3-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 15 [17097.264163] usb 3-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [17112.516598] usb 3-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [17112.732382] usb 3-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 16 [17123.164092] usb 3-5: device not accepting address 16, error -110 [17123.276082] usb 3-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 17 [17133.708128] usb 3-5: device not accepting address 17, error -110 [17133.708225] hub 3-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5 [17134.112157] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4 [17134.270582] usb 2-2: not running at top speed; connect to a high speed hub [17134.286234] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [17134.291535] scsi10 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices [17134.319932] usb-storage: device found at 4 [17134.320002] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [17139.318505] usb-storage: device scan complete [17139.323749] scsi 10:0:0:0: Direct-Access WDC WD12 00VE-00KWT0 0000 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 [17139.346562] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] 234441648 512-byte hardware sectors (120034 MB) [17139.356537] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off [17139.356559] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 27 00 00 00 [17139.356568] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [17139.366555] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] 234441648 512-byte hardware sectors (120034 MB) [17139.376829] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off [17139.376853] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 27 00 00 00 [17139.376863] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [17139.376884] sdb: sdb1 [17139.765137] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk [17139.765572] sd 10:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Worth to note is that it takes more than one minute for it to become ready where many regular users already has unplugged the cable and reporting it as not working. I am prepared to help out sorting this issue out since I have now converted to 64 bit and want it to be at least as good as my 32 bit machine. The distribution I am running is UbuntuStudio64 which I will keep but I have no problem trying out new kernels or other patches if needed. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- USB HD, ehci_hcd reverts to ohci_hcd under x86_64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/306067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
