Apologies for the long output above - it was meant to be attached. One small correction. The lsmod output differs because on one computer, a usb device was plugged in and then removed while on the other it was not. If both computers have a usb device plugged in and then removed, they show the same outputs. For example, once a usb device is plugged and then removed from the computer with 1 usb port (and w/o problems), the output changes to: $ lsmod | grep usb usb_storage 75072 0 scsi_mod 144648 3 sg,sd_mod,usb_storage libusual 17040 1 usb_storage usbcore 134912 5 usb_storage,libusual,uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd
