Can you change your resolution on the fly with a ctl,alt,+ or ctl,alt,-
combination?  Have you tried to choose your default resolution in the
System --> Preferences --> Screen Resolution tool?  The check box that
says 'Make Default for this computer only' may fix this circumstance.

Martin Bergner is right, xorg is set up to choose among a list of
possible resolutions (i.e. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768) depending on the
monitor detection during boot up.  As such this is not a bug unless the
above methods do not work.
