i have checkgmail 1.10-1 already installed from the ubuntu repos. (sorry
for the incorrect version posted)

the output from starting checkgmail -v  (conditions like mentioned
above):

** Description changed:

  unbuntu 6.10
- checkgmail 1.10
+ checkgmail 1.10-1 (from the ubuntu edgy repos.)
  networkmanager 0.6.3
  
  when checkgmail has been started prior a connection is established (e.g. 
startup), the error message (and broken checkgmail-symbol) is present, even if 
the connection exists in the meanwhile and a message poll works correctly.
  a restart of checkgmail is the only way to solve the issue.
