I'd also like to add this happens with me as well. I have a high end
machine (3.4Ghz CPU, dual SLI 8800 GTX, RAID0 SSD, 4GB RAM) and firefox
will cause Xorg to 100% CPU and everything freezes for sometimes as long
as 5+ seconds when opening or closing new tabs. Even loading pages
feels sluggish or causes freeze.

After GDM log-in, the desktop will also hang for 10+ seconds with only
the background image showing. Panels, icons, startup sound, etc. are
not loading until many seconds later.

Disabling Compiz doesn't improve things that much. (maybe shaves one
second off)

I've tried with SLI enabled and disabled and get same results. It seems
to be an issue that happened late with 8.04 after some upgrades, and
wasn't fixed/resolved in 8.10. I am not sure, but think it all happened
around the xorg 7.3 upgrade time frame.
