Hi Bryce Everything I wrote about the way I fixed my situation was in my original post. I posted this bug so that FUTURE versions of the software will have different functionality, so besides being a bug it's also a feature request. There is no way I'm installing Gutsy again and then Hardy to see if this still a problem. I upgraded to 8.10 the other night, but have long since disabled Compiz so I can't say whether it's still an issue. But it would be nice to get feedback from developers to say "We recognize the potential of upgrade process difficulty as an issue, the same way changing resolution of the monitor reverts back if it's not working".
