Well this bug is marked as a duplicate. The original bug actually gives a solution and tells you where to get a "fixed" version of network manager. Quotation marks there because it's no different from the buggy one in terms of connecting to my flatmate's AP. I solved this problem by completely uninstalling network-manager and installing wicd instead.
