Same annoying issue here, I have a Microsoft wireless laser desktop 6000 keyboard (together with a mouse wireless laser 6000), I have upgraded hardy to intrepid, and now all the extra buttons which aren't included in the 105 standard layout don't even send any event to X (I realized that with the xev command). So it should not be a "mapping" issue, it seems that the settings that worked great in Hardy (by itself, without any intervention! ) remained (for what I can see in the settings files and from the keyboard shortcuts). I have also tried to set many different layouts (among which all the Microsoft's and the evdev as someone indicated...) without success. Neither the "solution" of adding in sessions the command succeeded: xinput set-button-map "4" 1 2 3 17 18 19 20 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16. The extra keys continue not sending any event.
The output of setxkbmap -print is: layout: Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.0A xkb_keymap { xkb_keycodes { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" }; xkb_types { include "complete" }; xkb_compat { include "complete" }; xkb_symbols { include "pc+it+inet(evdev)" }; xkb_geometry { include "pc(pc104)" }; }; layout: Generic 105 keys PC xkb_keymap { xkb_keycodes { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" }; xkb_types { include "complete" }; xkb_compat { include "complete" }; xkb_symbols { include "pc+it+inet(evdev)" }; xkb_geometry { include "pc(pc105)" }; layout: Evdev xkb_keymap { xkb_keycodes { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" }; xkb_types { include "complete" }; xkb_compat { include "complete" }; xkb_symbols { include "pc+it+inet(evdev)" }; xkb_geometry { include "pc(pc104)" }; }; layout: Microsoft Natural Wireless Ergonomic 7000 xkb_keymap { xkb_keycodes { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" }; xkb_types { include "complete" }; xkb_compat { include "complete" }; xkb_symbols { include "pc+it+inet(evdev)" }; xkb_geometry { include "microsoft(natural)" }; This is the only that has a geometry of microsoft(natural), but I'm afraid it is not enough to enable my extra buttons... The keyboard disposition is "Italy". I attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the lspci -vvnn output. I hope this will be fixed soon, for the comfort of such keys!
