Confirmed in amd64 Intrepid.

It appears to be triggered by the use of TeX formatting in the label (in
this case, ^=superscript): plain text labels work normally, while TeX
labels appear correctly on-screen but cause this error and are missing
from the output png file.

The Nabble page linked above is a report of this bug to upstream Octave,
but it was sent to a development discussion list rather than to their
actual bug report list, and Launchpad won't let me link it as an
upstream bug watch.
