I have the same bug on my Hardy install. I installed the 0.8 version from https://edge.launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/+files/sunbird_0.8 +nobinonly-0ubuntu0mt804_i386.deb and Sunbird started correctly. Yay! It even correctly syncs with Google Calendar CalDAV, after I hit Ctrl-R.
