I have the same problem writing DVD-R no matter how I do it. However, someone said they had success with DVD+RW and DVD-RW so I tried DVD+RW and the DVD copy in k3b worked just fine.
Problem exists in Brasero, gnomebake, and k3b so perhaps growfs is the culprit.
