In 8.10 I got significantly slower maximum internet network connection speed
(5mbps instead of 10mbps).
I found out that network manager used a automatic MTU value and it seemed to
choose a lower MTU size than previous releases (about 500 in this my case). Is
there any reason for it to use a lower MTU size than previous releases and
Windows XP?
I changed MTU to 1500 and now I have the same speed as in Windows and previous
Ubuntu releases.

To make matters worse there is a bug (Bug #278216) in network manager
configuration that keeps it from saving the setting between reboots if
you do also change something in the IPv4 Tab (reported as another bug)
but that's a whole other story....
