You're probably right about nothing being added to Xorg.0.log, but `tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log` has fooled me before. You have the same EDID information several times at the end of your Xorg.0.log, and if that gets added every time it flashes you may not see it since the last lines of the file will still be the same. Sometimes monitors flash when they are probed for EDID information. See bug 278471 and duplicates for examples.
