I have probably same problem. When pressing brightness keys the value in /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness changes, but nothing more happen. I use kubuntu intrepid 64bit. My laptop is FUJITSU SIEMENS, LIFEBOOK E8420 with nvidia GeForce 9300M GS video adapter.
