Bug #303177 appears to be quite related. Following that, I did boot in recovery mode root shell prompt with network sudo apt-get install libdrm-instal1 exit resume
At this point, desktop backround came up with top and bottom line white background. No applets, nothing on the keyboard works, mouse buttons don't work.
