I've got similiar problems with gnome-power-manager. The whole responsiveness of gnome-power-manager seems to be slow - it takes about a minute till ubuntu recognized that the AC was plugged in. Also when I want to shut down computer I get a dialog about gnome-power-manager not responding. There is a discussion about this bug at ubuntuforums http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=963832
