as the apparent root of the problem. # bash -x /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/nvidia-common + . /usr/share/debconf/confmodule ++ '[' '!' '' ']' ++ PERL_DL_NONLAZY=1 ++ export PERL_DL_NONLAZY ++ '[' '' ']' ++ exec /usr/share/debconf/frontend /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/nvidia-common # echo $? 10 As I no longer have an Nvidia card, I ran "dpkg -d nvidia-common", which made no difference so I ran "dpkg -P nvidia-common". After which "dpkg --configure -a" appears to have worked.
