I face this issue in a similar way. I have "Front" two times in KMix and also "PCM".
When I put both "Front" to full throttle, and "PCM" to medium throttle, everything is smooth at normal volume except system notifications (e.g. Kopete sounds). Funny, both "Front" sliders are working, I can use both of them for the same channel. Since about 6 months this is sometimes better (e.g. only one Front channel) or worse (like now).
