Actually, it appears that I can restore the sound a bit quicker by logging out of my GNOME session, running "sudo alsa force-reload", and logging back in. But this trick doesn't work if I put the command in a "/etc/pm/sleep.d/" script that runs on resume, so it's not much of a workaround.
