Further investigation by running startx in the ssh connection I get the
following error:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning: Type “ONE_LEVEL” has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
> Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

Then everything goes dead………….

I have checked /etc/default/console-setup as suggested in known issues
and although not an expert it seems OK and I have run sudo dpkg-
reconfigure console-setup and that made no changes to the file. There is
no mouse entry in the file but I guess that is not surprising as I think
a standard mouse is now be detected by the kernel.

My guess is its not X at fault but gdm.
