The transparency occurs on the TrueColor render mode but not on the DirectColor mode. All other modes were unavailable for test (not sure why, perhaps they are incompatible with the X display settings).
Also the transparency isn't really a transparency at all. It seems the image is OR-ed with what is behind the window.
