I'm having this same problem since I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid release candidate a day before final release.
The difference compared Elias' case is that when this starts to happen for me, it repeats until X is restarted. It's impossible to switch user without logging the user out. This seems to repeat almost every time when I'm trying to switch user.
