I was able to map compose wot windows keys via GNOME System / Preferences / Keyboard / Layout / Other Options / Compose key position: Left Win-key is Compose. Right Win-key is Compose.
What is your .xmodmap, or is it better to remove it and use the above lines? Also I had to 'Enable support to enter complex characters' in Language settings. This also didn't migrate well in Interpid upgrade.
