I've had the same problem with 8.10 (both LiveCD and dual boot with WinXP) on a Gigabyte GA-MA74G-S2H motherboard with 8111C chip. After running lshw -C Network, it says Eth0 is disabled. Even after enabling Eth0 (not quite sure how, tried ~3 pages of commands!), removing Network Manager and editing the Interfaces file to Auto Eth0 and Auto inet Eth0 (I think, off the top of my head), still can't connect to the internet. DHCP, IP and MAC addresses assigned fine - doing it manually makes no difference. Yet to try the most recent Realtek Linux driver though.
