Easier way:

sudo apt-get remove python-setuptools
sudo apt-get install python-setuptools

I think I had this upgrade problem, because I had manually updated
easy_install. The upgrader bailed oumt (never offered reboot option),
but the computer could be succesfully restarted. However, unless you
manually fix this, you'll have package manager errors all the time.
