** Attachment added: "Xorg log after logout"
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19671625/Xorg.0.log_after

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

First login after boot is perfectly OK (fast and smooth). System is
- stable, compiz works grate. After logout or X restart
- (<Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Backspace>), GDM doesn't work. I see black screen, after
- while gdm try to reconfigure (Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode) in
- low resolution on broken screen (shifted down with artefacts).
+ stable, compiz works. After logout or X restart
+ (<Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Backspace>), GDM doesn't (re)start. I see black screen,
+ after while gdm try to reconfigure (Ubuntu is running in low-graphics
+ mode) in low resolution on broken screen (shifted down with artefacts).

After logout from X in /var/log/gdm/:0.log the following line could be
  found:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not
  found)

The same problem happens after upgrade 8.04 to 8.10 as well as on clean
installation of 8.10. It doesn't happen after ''switch user''.

hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad R61, Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M
software: ubuntu 8.10, Nvidia binary driver 177.80

Details in attachments: logs befor and after (logout, and attempt to
second login), from GDM and Xorg.
