Xfce vs KDE does not make a difference so my second guess is the battery level needs to be about 90% for it to fail. I think I was able to get it to boot while it was failing by going into failsafe, dropping to root, executing "shutdown now", and then canceling when the menu came up but I can not reproduce this.
