The "Input Method" menu of the context menu shows "System" selected.
Switching to "Simple" solves the problem.

Similar result can be achieved by resetting the GTK_IM_MODULE_VARIABLE:

$ echo $GTK_IM_MODULE
xim
$ unset GTK_IM_MODULE
$ gedit # dead keys work in gedit

Now the big question is: What is this "System" input method and why
doesn't it work. Maybe this problem is caused by removing this highly
annoying scim-gtk2-immodule?

Seems like the im-switch program can be used to persist this setting.
