i have a similar problem, the only clicking, typing that works is the ability
to click on the shutdown icon on my panel as well as the keyboard sequences
1. ctrl + alt + backspace (restart x)
2. ctrl + alt + f2 (typically would change to virtual desktop 2, but when this
bug occurs, it causes the screen to flash)
