Confirmed at Hardy -> Intrepid Update. I had this on 3 different Systems, all of them rendered useless. Workaround when it happened was to enter shell (strg-alt-F1) DO NOT BOOT THE MACHINE dpkg --configure -a apt-get remove amarok amarok-engine-xine
and continue with apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade after another apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade i rebooted.
