The Kernel Panic freezes that I got left absolutely no trace (core) that I could find. However - after receiving a tip about certain WLAN chips not working with Intrepid I pulled out the D-Link DWL-520+ board (this is a server) and the problem disappeared. Another tip about installing a backport-package did however not help. I have to use a wired network now, but the machine is stable.
