I can confirm the issue, on Inteprid (2.6.27-7-generic), exactly the same
hardware, with a note: the previous reporter might not have noticed that sound
is playing, but at a very very low level. I can hear music with no distortions,
but only by plugging in headphones and turning every control to max (this would
seriously hurt my ears in normal conditions). Forum posts found on various
websites suggest that
1. It is a regression, and it was fixed on 8.04 - I have tested with the live
cd and it is not, same behaviour
2. Volume levels are normal if the system is booted first in Windows, with
correct drivers installed. Whatever the level set in Windows will be maximum in
Linux. I cannot test this yet
3. The same problem appears in freebsd and osx (various kits from osx86project)
- not sure if testing those would be relevant here
4. alsa 1.0.18 includes a fix for this

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
       Status: Fix Released => Confirmed
