Confirming this. I yesterday had to lunch ppoeconf in order to connect to my company and this made an entry "wlan0" in /etc/network/interfaces so networkmanger tried to find an "wired wlan0"!! And it doesnt show the applet until pluging a cable in. After that it tried to connect via wlan0, with no success ;-) Commenting wlan0 out in /etc/network/interfaces helped me to get it work.
