I have a similar problem. I have upgraded to 8.10 (64 bit) which has worked fine for several weeks however now what ever default program that is linked to the desktop "Places" and then "Home folder, Desktop, Documents, etc becomes Eye of GNOME Image Viewer.
I receive also receive an error when I try and view Computer or media from the same drop down list from "Places". I can't say what may have started this behaviour.
