I was going to add the output to the xorg logfiles here, but there is nothing. That is, when i go to "system" > "preferences" > "appearance" > "visual effects" and click "normal" or "extra", i get a small screen saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled", but nothing is written to /var/log/Xorg.*.log.
