I'm wondering if this problem is somehow related to Ubuntu not discovering the right screen resolution on wide screens. See Bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/293254 Do you have that problem as well? I could imagine that the X-Server can not be restarted correctly because of a resolution issue and hangs the whole system. It's just an idea. I have no in depth knowledge on X or sleep mode.
