Public bug reported: Please note, I am not a programming expert, I am just an intelligent user.
I am using Hardy Heron 8.04 with Kbuntu PROBLEM:- The "update manager" is not working. The System/Administration/Update Manager command produces the usual list of updates available but, when I click on the install button, it asks for my password and then rejects the command giving a long error message about synaptic having failed. The message reads: Failed to run /usr/sbin/synaptic '--hide-main-window' '--non- interactive' '--parent-window-id' '27262979' '-o' 'Synaptic::closeZvt=true' '--progress-str' 'Please wait, this can take some time.' '--finish-str' 'Update is complete' '--set-selections-file' '/tmp/tmpKxQlaK' as user root. The underlying authorisation mechanism (sudo) does not allow you to run this program. Contact the system administrator. I have looked for advice and some of it require me to enter "sudo" commands from a terminal. However, the sudo command triggers the password request and it then says my username is not in the approved list of "sudoers" and that the incident will be reported. I am the only user, so who can it be reported to? This lack of access to sudo is causing me some other problems. Both of these features (update manager and "sudo commands from a terminal") have worked for me in the past with no problem at all. I did install a fractal drawing package (xfractint) a few weeks ago. The problem seems to have arisen since that installation, but the fractal program works OK and there weren't any errors during the installation, so there may not be a connection. I would be grateful for some understandable help. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- sudo password is rejected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/295217 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
