I've mostly moved to using Hardy now. Unfortunately I can no longer recall exactly what I was doing that meant I got bitten by this problem in the first place :-( but the hardy laptop I'm currently sitting at has the relevant files in the right places, and correctly reports fonts via xlsfonts, so as far as I can see it's no longer a current problem.
