Jeremy, SDL_AUDIODRIVER='pulse' tuxpaint - fixes the issues experienced. SDL_AUDIODRIVER='alsa' tuxpaint - does not fix the issues. SDL_AUDIODRIVER='esd' tuxpaint - fixes the issues.
I'm not an expert in how Pulse Audio routes/emulates other sound daemons in LTSP, but I can say that I have the default Ubuntu LTSP setup which uses PA.
